Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock Hands Over Looted Artefacts

Subhead

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has returned 22 artefacts that were looted in the 19th century to Nigeria. The artefacts were handed over at a ceremony in Abuja, Nigeria's capital. Baerbock said that the return of the artefacts was a "gesture of reconciliation" and that it was "important to acknowledge the colonial injustice that was committed." She also said that Germany was committed to working with Nigeria to build a "new chapter of intensified cooperation."

Additional Information

The artefacts that were returned include bronze sculptures, ivory carvings, and other objects. They were looted from the Kingdom of Benin in 1897 by British forces. The artefacts were then sold to museums and collectors around the world. In recent years, there has been a growing movement to return looted artefacts to their countries of origin.

The return of the artefacts to Nigeria is a significant step forward in the effort to address colonial injustice. It is also a sign of the growing cooperation between Germany and Nigeria. The two countries are working together on a number of issues, including security, trade, and development.
