Bahamian Artist Tony McKay, aka Obeah Man, Dies at 80

Tony McKay, a Bahamian artist known as the Obeah Man, has died at the age of 80.

McKay was born on Cat Island on February 18, 1942, and died on February 25, 2023, in Exuma. He was a singer-songwriter who blended folk rock, carnival, junkanoo, calypso, reggae, and African music.

Tony was born into a family of musicians, and he began playing the guitar at an early age. He formed his first band, The Obeah Men, in the 1960s, and they quickly became one of the most popular bands in the Bahamas. Tony's music was often political, and he used his songs to speak out against racism and poverty.

In the 1970s, Tony moved to the United States, where he continued to release music and perform. He also worked as a producer and songwriter for other artists, including Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. In 2004, Tony was inducted into the Bahamas Music Hall of Fame.

Tony's death is a great loss to the Bahamian music community. He was a talented musician and a passionate advocate for social justice. His music will continue to inspire and uplift people for generations to come.

Tony McKay is survived by his wife, four children, and nine grandchildren.
