Typhoon Shanshan Barrels Into Japan, Triggering Rare Warnings

800,000 Evacuated as Region Braces for One of Biggest Ever Storms

Hundreds of flights cancelled and factories closed as typhoon approaches

Typhoon Shanshan made landfall in southern Japan early Thursday, bringing torrential rain and strong winds that caused flooding and damage. The storm is expected to continue to move across the country over the next few days, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to central and northern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued rare warnings for the storm, saying it could produce a large-scale disaster. The agency is urging residents in affected areas to take precautions and evacuate to safety.

As of 6 p.m. local time, Typhoon Shanshan was moving northwest over waters south of Japan at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 216 kilometers per hour.

The storm has already caused widespread damage in southern Japan. In the city of Miyazaki, strong winds toppled trees and power lines, leaving thousands of homes without power. Flooding has also been reported in several areas.

The JMA is urging residents in affected areas to take the following precautions:

  • Evacuate to a safe place if you are in a low-lying area or near a river.
  • Secure loose objects around your home.
  • Stay away from windows and doors.
  • Listen to the radio or television for updates on the storm.

The storm is expected to continue to move across Japan over the next few days. The JMA is urging residents in affected areas to stay informed about the storm and to take precautions to stay safe.
